Diapers

Well, I have been doing great!!

OK, on to other things. I have been feeling this need to sew, and start getting ready for baby, and lay around just doing nothing.... Anyhow! I am going to be fulfilling two of those things!! Yea me! I have decided to take the plunge and give cloth diapering a go this time around. I mean hey, why not right! So I decided $15-20 bucks a pop PER diaper was just not my thing. I would rather pay for the disposables for that price. I know in the long run you still save... I think. Well, I didn't want to go that route anyway. I went beyond that and decided to look into making, yes you read that right, I am  going to be making my own cloth diapers. Oh and um, WAY cheaper than buying them! Let me tell you, this is one sewing project where you really do save more to DIY! So, without further ado... drum roll please!

Insert soaker into the back pocket.

I had all the supplies but ONE! Can you believe that! I can, really. So let me tell you about this little diaper. I did have to make a one time investment of an awesome book called Cloth Diapers Made Easy by this company. It came with 4 individual patterns for the different sizes. I love that part. And there are pictures for every step AND all sorts of different kinds of diapers you can make. This particular one is called a pocket diaper. I am still learning all the cloth diapering lingo. Aside from the book, the only purchase I had to make was buying the PUL fabric which is basically the waterproof fabric. Babyville Boutique offers this material in cute prints ($15 a yard) as well. I did not buy the printed kind. I bought solid white ($13 a yard) and provided my own cute print because I have TONS of flannel. I used solid white flannel (I will need to buy more solid colors I think) for my lining, and next to the diaper in the top pictures is my very own DIY soaker as well. I already have a huge stack of prefolded diapers from a purchase of the wrong kind of burp cloths I was looking for so that's what I used. I didn't read the instructions first. I just started chopping away, then read how, and I messed up a little. I should have sewn the lines across it first and then cut it out. Oh well. It will still work, I am sure. And its only the first, so no biggy! A big change I will make for the rest is to invest in the snap press pliers thing by babyville. I bought the snaps hoping I could use the snap press I already have. Well, I couldnt. So I used the snaps I had. That might have taken the longest of the whole project was putting in all those snaps. Because I had to press the little prongs not only through 3 layers but 2 of those layers are like plastic. It was a long process. So for the future diapers I will have to get that other snap press, but not without a coupon!

Overall, I like it!!

When I get more made and figure out how many a yard of PUL fabric makes I will tell you the cost of each diaper. Don't be fooled though, I bought the flannel at 89 cents a yard on black Friday a few several years ago. I am glad I finally have something to do with it besides PJ's.

  1. I have that book, too. And I've made medium sized pocket diapers with it. Personally, I'm concerned about wicking if I put flannel on the outside of the PUL, so I just bought patterned PUL (with Joann's 40% off coupon). I can't wait to see the rest of your cute diapers :)
